Chapter 13

Swallowed by the Earth

Caroline needed a swift understanding of what I was and why she was so important to me and the planet. So I started at the beginning.

“Long before I was born, the planet was exploited by humans. God destroyed the Earth with water, but he destroyed the humans with Amon before the flood. It wasn’t long before Amon was the most powerful thing on the planet."

"You said thing?"

"Yes, again, I am not human. I once was, but I am no longer."

Caroline sighed but didn't protest to hearing more.

"Amon was a good and just general in God’s army of a half-angel, half-human soldiers. We were charged to kill criminals when the human’s justice system failed. My body was 10 years old when Amon found me. He demonstrated what he was and invited me to be like him. When I was 24, I finally accepted, thinking his mission was a good one. Amon picked up a God complex somewhere along the way. With a need to have followers, he recruited more of us. Plucked them from alleys, bad homes, wherever he could find them. In the end, he told us everyone had died out except us. They could only die due to starvation. I thought it had been their choice, but later, I learned they'd been forced. There were five of us in the end.”

Staring at the wall, Caroline looked to have shut down on me, but somewhere in her human mind, I was sure I had her rapt attention.

“I was the thing that tore that man apart in front of you last night. I figured you suspected, but I wanted to come clean about it.”

“You left me.” Her voice was hollow. But she was still with me.

“I’m sorry for that. I had the weight of the world on my shoulders and the knowledge that I’d fallen in love with you tugging at different parts of my being. I’m not human, and I have a responsibility to the planet, so I had to ask myself: Could I perform that duty and love you without the two conflicting?”

“Have you answered that question?” Her voice broke.

“Yes. I wasn’t sure that I could until I learned that you aren’t a normal human yourself. After years of dreaming about you and learning about a symbol I found on your neck, I realized that we were destined to be together—”

“Wait a minute.” She jerked the sheets over and rolled to face me. “You expect me to believe that what I saw last night wasn’t just some form of post-traumatic stress disorder and that you’re not human. On top of that, you want me to be okay with the fact that you’ve slept with me and think you’re married to me in some other screwed up culture?”

“That’s not all I need you to accept.”

Caroline’s face was pasty.

“I don’t think you need to hear a long list of disgusting, minute details. The important ones are going to upset you enough.” I put my face in my hands.
